Link Between Allergies and The Immune System

Many kids are affected by allergies, and it’s undoubtedly common among many households.

An allergy occurs due to your child’s immune system’s response to something that irritates them. Some experience mild symptoms like sneezing, coughing or sore throat, and others can have life-threatening reactions like anaphylaxis. Allergies are considered the most common chronic health condition in the world. Some of the most common allergies are eczema, hay fever, asthma or food allergies.

Allergy and the Immune System

There is a direct link between your child’s immune system and their allergies. Allergic reactions begin in our immune system. So when your child comes across an allergen (something they are allergic to), their immune system reacts and produces antibodies to fight it. This process can cause itching, rash, runny nose, watery eyes, etc.

Can Allergies Lower The Immune System?

Unfortunately, allergies can weaken your child’s immune system, and they are at greater risk of becoming sick with a viral infection, cold or flu. So treating your child’s allergy is vital in protecting them from other illnesses.

How to Help Your Child Who Has Allergies

There are ways you can help your child by minimising the risk of becoming ill from allergens and strengthening their immune system.

  • Good Hygiene

This has been a hot topic during the recent Covid pandemic; however, practising good hygiene should be a daily habit at any time. Get your child into a routine of washing their hands regularly, especially before food. Also, refraining from touching their face (especially their eyes) can decrease the chances of catching a virus or another hay fever episode.

  • Balanced Diet

Your child should get essential nutrients from their diet, so make sure you include such immunity-boosting and antioxidant foods like leafy greens, kale, cauliflower, berries, garlic, honey, poultry (chicken, turkey, etc.) and yoghurt regularly. We suggest supplementing with Childlife Essentials Multi-Vitamin and Mineral for those picky eaters to provide a broad spectrum of nutrients they might miss out on.

  • Keep Your Child’s Surroundings Clean

Many allergens come from our home, and viruses stay around on surfaces, so keeping the environment you live in regularly cleaned can help eliminate potential allergens or viruses.

  • Keep Your Child’s Allergies Under Control.

Don’t ignore your child’s allergies and get them looked at by your GP and treated. If your child is prone to allergies, we suggest Childlife Essentials Aller-care, which supports your child’s immune response and protects from environmental allergens.
