Tummy Time for Babies
Once your baby turns four weeks old, midwives and plunket nurses recommend starting tummy time each day. Tummy time is when you put your baby on their tummy for anywhere from a few minutes to 15 mins and more (increasing it as you go) while you’re watching them.
There are many reasons why your baby should practice tummy time:
Helps develop neck muscles responsible for lifting their head
Helps develop back muscles necessary for sitting up, crawling and walking
Helps develop their motor skills
Helps the transition to crawl
Don’t be surprised if your baby dislikes tummy time in the beginning. Not many enjoy it and usually end up in an awkward face-plant position. But once they get the hang of it, they enjoy it. Older babies love reaching for toys and looking around.
Tips on Tummy Time:
Get your baby to enjoy tummy time after their nap or a nappy change
Put a towel or blanket on the floor for a softer feel
Place your baby’s favourite toys in front of them
Start with 3 to 5 minutes and gradually increase the time
You must remember to watch your baby while they are doing tummy time and never put them to sleep on their tummy. Tummy time is crucial for your baby’s development, and parents are suggested to include this activity in their baby’s life daily.
